Barry's Core Commitments Book Club
Throughout Spring 2026, Barry's Core Commitments Book Club brought faculty and staff together for thoughtful discussions that fostered reflection, dialogue, and mission-centered learning. Through shared reading, participants explored contemporary issues from interdisciplinary perspectives while strengthening connections to Barry University's Core Commitments and Dominican heritage.
The series opened on January 29, 2026, with a discussion of Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, facilitated by Dr. Carmen McCrink. Participants explored the book's integration of Indigenous knowledge, scientific inquiry, and storytelling, reflecting on themes of gratitude, reciprocity, stewardship, and care for creation.
On March 25, 2026, the book club reconvened to discuss Men Who Hate Women by Laura Bates, facilitated by Sister Leonor Esnard, O.P. The conversation examined the rise of online misogyny and the radicalization of men in digital spaces, encouraging thoughtful dialogue about the cultural influences that contribute to gender-based extremism while considering pathways toward accountability, healthy relationships, and positive social change.
Together, these book club gatherings fostered meaningful conversation, interdisciplinary learning, and reflective engagement, reinforcing Barry University's commitment to mission-centered education, respectful dialogue, and lifelong learning.
