On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, in observance of Black History Month, Barry’s student NAACP Chapter, in collaboration with South Florida People of Color and Bread for the World, hosted the Redline Historical Bus Tour, an educational experience exploring the history and lasting effects of discriminatory redlining practices in South Florida. Departing from the Landon Parking Lot, participants traveled through neighborhoods including Overtown, Liberty City, and Brownsville, examining how New Deal–era policies and subsequent patterns of segregation and disinvestment shaped these communities.
Guided narration provided historical context throughout the tour, while participants had opportunities to reflect on the experiences of local communities and the ways historical decisions continued to influence South Florida’s social and economic landscape. The experience concluded with shared dialogue that encouraged participants to connect the historical context of redlining with contemporary developments in the region, including neighborhood change and climate gentrification.
The tour provided an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and community members to learn beyond the classroom, engage with local history, and deepen their understanding of the relationship between policy, place, and community life in South Florida.
