Program Overview Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction

The Curriculum and Instruction program faculty is strongly committed to the integration of theory, research, policy, and practice throughout the program. You are exposed to multiple educational perspectives on issues of design and policy, allowing you to assume a leadership role in curriculum development, design, implementation, and evaluation.

The faculty mentors you in your professional development and scholarship, which are critical for positions in higher education and curriculum leadership. Full-time faculty will know you by name and you will not be number in your doctoral courses.

Doctoral students who work full-time can complete the coursework for the program in a 3-year time frame by enrolling in two classes per semester.

  • Analyze and synthesize the theoretical underpinnings of curriculum, instruction, and leadership
  • Apply the theories and concepts of curriculum to policy decisions at the local, state, national, and international levels
  • Clarify one's ethical and theoretical perspectives and relate these to professional goals
  • Develop and implement an independent research investigation
  • Evaluate and contribute to the literature in curriculum

Application Deadline: June 1 for Fall admission

Students who wish to be admitted to the PhD in Curriculum and Instruction must fulfill all of the following:

  • Completed application
  • A master's or higher degree in your field of specialization or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university
  • If you have limited academic credentials in your chosen area of specialization you may be asked to take master's level courses, which will not be applied towards the doctoral degree, prior to admission to the Program
  • Graduate GPA of at least 3.25 (A=4.0)
  • Two recent letters of professional recommendation (two must be academic instructors or advisors)
  • An interview with two faculty members
  • GRE Not Required
