Bachelor of Science in Education

Barry University's Bachelor of Science in Education (with Master of Science option) is molding the future of the education system by preparing highly qualified teachers who are empowered to teach and respond to the learning needs of students from across the nation and the world. You will become classroom ready in early childhood, elementary, or special-education teaching, with the choice of a content minor in one of the following areas: Math, Science, Literature, or Social Science.

Our bachelor's degree program emphasizes the content areas that prepare students to be classroom-ready by the time they graduate. Students are able to receive Reading and ESOL endorsements. Students also gain Hands-On Teaching Experiences by interning at a school during their senior year of undergraduate studies.

If you would like to continue your education with a master's degree, you can transition seamlessly into our one-year Master of Science in Education program. A Bachelor of Science in Education with Master of Science (BS/MS in Education) may be completed in five years and builds on what you learn in your undergraduate studies.

The Bachelor of Science in Education program automatically integrates two endorsements into the degree, making you eligible for Florida certification in Kindergarten to Grade 12. This means that there are no additional courses required to receive:

• Endorsement in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (A State of Florida Endorsement)
• Endorsement in (teaching) Reading (A State of Florida Endorsement)

Having these endorsements will set you apart from other graduates because these two highly-regarded endorsement areas are considered critical shortage areas for some school systems. Hiring principals often desire to employ teachers with these endorsements. While many teachers are going back to receive these endorsements, you will already have them! Additionally, these two endorsements also give you the necessary foundation to pursue teaching in other states and overseas.

What Does This Mean?

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) is one of the six regional accrediting organizations in the United States. Universities in Florida fall under the jurisdiction of SACSCOC.

A Minor in Education is a way for you to explore teaching within your subject area, learn different facets of education, and gain experience working with students in a variety of settings. Completing the minor gives you a strong knowledge base in the area of education and prepares you for a graduate program or career in the field of education. 

Barry undergraduates with any major are welcome to complete the minor.

The minor consists of 21 credits (7 courses) and passing the General Knowledge Exam (GKE) portion of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination.
