Barry Urban Garden to be Introduced on November 28

The Barry University community is invited to a short ceremony to introduce the Barry Urban Garden (BUG) on Wednesday, November 28 from 11:00 a.m. to noon. The ceremony will take place near the garden space, which is located in the green areas surrounding the southwest side of Powers Hall, outside of the Adrian Dominican School of Education.

The BUG is a values-based community agriculture initiative that will provide organic produce to low-income residents in nearby neighborhoods categorized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as urban food deserts. Faculty, staff, students, and community members will collaborate to implement projects within the BUG framework, which will provide experiential learning opportunities to students and engaged scholarship opportunities to faculty.

Students enrolled in service-learning courses have been contributing to BUG preparations by researching the nutritional and medicinal properties of plants, designing garden signs, promoting the BUG through social media, and spreading mulch and soil.

During the November 28 ceremony, students will reflect on their contributions to the BUG and plant seedlings they grew and collected. Faculty and staff who serve on the BUG advisory committee will share information about the permaculture methodology and other philosophical underpinnings that have influenced the development of the garden.

Refreshments will be served.

Faculty, students, and staff who would like to contribute to the BUG initiative should contact Asha Starks, CCSI program coordinator, at astarks@barry.edu or 305-899-5465.
