The subject of Capital Punishment (Death Penalty) is an ongoing source of controversy amidst all levels of society. Both secular and religious institutions alike have taken resolute positions for and against the death penalty. For instance, the United States Council of Bishops assert that the principled Catholic response to crime and punishment is rooted in religious convictions about good and evil, sin and redemption, justice and mercy. It is also shaped by our commitment to the life and dignity of every human person, and the common good. (USCCB, A Culture of Life and the Penalty of Death). On the other hand, there are religious communities that condone Capital Punishment based upon their interpretation of scripture.
The purpose of this Snack and Chat is to raise awareness sociological and criminological implications related Capital Punishment and its impacts on our society; provide an historical and ethical of the death penalty; and to stimulate reflection on the dynamics of Capital Punishment through the lenses faith and the sciences. This luncheon has been programmed to coincide with the observance the World Day Against the Death Penalty.
